Mataatua: The House That Came Home, Bay of Plenty Roadtrippers

We will enjoy a delicious morning tea at the lovely Red Barn. A café, bakery & gift shop in a lovely country setting of Thornton. Our next stop will be the award-winning visitor experience of Mataatua – the House that came back. A fully carved Māori ancestral house that travelled the world for over a century and finally came home.

But I get to live in my house mortgage-free, which is huge, and it makes me feel really awesome and powerful to not have a giant payment to worry about. My mom actually works at the management company I use, but I recommend using a management company that specializes in short-term rentals. It's not cheap to use one, but to me, it's totally worth it because I barely have to do any real work.

Here are some of my best tips for making money off your tiny home

The origins of the rituals are rooted in the cultural history of the Māori people and the traditions are still practised in modern Māori society. As a visitor you are welcomed with a customary greeting by the Tangata Whenua – people of the area. The ritual welcoming ceremony – Pōhiri – includes a number of traditional Tikanga – protocols – that stem from the ancestral roots of the Ngāti Awa people.

This story is amazing and nearly unbelievable, and you need to hear it told. You will marvel at the intricacy of the carved representations, and you will be doubly amazed as the Legends unfold in lights. You will be offered traditional kawakawa tea & kumara brownies following this experience. I've since bought two more tiny houses that sit behind my rental properties.A lot of people think that there is this huge barrier to entry into real estate. But the government wants you to buy a home for the first time and incentivizes it in certain cases.

The tale of how it became ‘the house that came home’ is also the story of the restoration of the Ngāti Awa people’s iwi after its disruption following European settlement. Eventually the Otago Museum agreed to return the house, and Mataatua was restored and opened to the public in 2011. Partnering with others is another way to make home-buying more affordable.

Entering the house we take part in the hongi, clasping the hands of the members of the house we press the bridge of our nose against theirs. This act represents a sharing of the breath of life and is an intimate welcome into their sacred house. Moving into the doorway of the house we are invited to remove our shoes to allow the souls of our feet to connect with the Mataatua, an additional mark of respect that is practised in all Māori households. Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI agent, also spoke to Newsweek about the theory that the killer could have been in the home prior to the victims' arrival and offered a somewhat different take. No suspect or person of interest has been identified in the crime as of Thursday. Four University of Idaho students were found dead November 13 at this three-story home on King Road in Moscow, Idaho.

When I bought my first house, I was teaching fourth-grade math and didn't have a very high income — I started at $43,000 and ended my 7-year-career at about $57,000 a year. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the members of the house my understanding of Māori culture has been elevated, and my respect for their heritage ignited. Surrounded by the 100 year old craftsmanship of the house I close my eyes and am transported deep into the heritage of the tribe.

The tiny house came with almost everything — countertops, a fridge, and a microwave. The only things we had to get done were plumbing and electrical. So we added RV hookups to the back of our lot, behind our house, and hooked up the tiny home. We also skirted the tiny house, to cover the cinder blocks and wheels. All of these extras cost us about $10,000 more which we took from our savings.

Before we hired the company, my fiance and I were tag-teaming all the work and it was really like a part-time job. I don't have to worry about guests or any issues — it's all taken care of. I maybe spend 2 hours a month on the rentals and that's just to make sure the invoices are paid and such. My first tiny house was a converted detached garage already in my yard. But make sure to check that you live in a zone where you're permitted to have a rental in your yard.

Following the interview, Newsweek reached out to Mains for further comment on the theory posed. If it's not booked 5 days in advance, I'll drop the price $10 a night. If the next day it's still not booked, I'll drop the price by another $10.

Shoot me an email or say "Hello" on Instagram @WanderlustCharli. Thanks for the insight into this piece of Maori culture. How strange that the house wouldn’t stay put in NZ to begin with. I have to admit I had no idea how to pronounce a lot of the words we encountered here but the guides were great and really made sure they educated us on the correct pronunciation. Cloud Atlas is on my reading list so thanks for the reminder. I have to say it was really inspiring to learn how the tribe have fought for the return of Mataatua.

But even in my second home, I rented out a room as an Airbnb. Steph Douglass is the co-founder of Open House Austin, an education-focused real estate brokerage. Yes, it was definitely refreshing to hear the wonderful end to the story of the house. After our one hour experience in Mataatua Wharenui we are invited to join our guide Harry for the Kai.

As a Kiwi, it’s interesting to see this all from the perspective of a tourist. Thanks Nicole, it was a fascinating topic to cover and I’m pleased we had the opportunity to visit. Located in the town of Whakatane Mataatua, Te Manuka Tutahi welcomes guests 7 days a week. A poignant example of just how little our European heritage is benefiting the lives of the Ngāti Awa people.

‘We teach you how to connect with the earth on a spiritual level, and you teach us how to get a job’ he jokes. Just four years later the newly formed Liberal Government decided that the house was to be dismantled and shipped to Sydney to represent the newly colonised New Zealand in the 1879 International Exhibition. After encountering a whirlpool in the ocean during his crossing, the brave Toroa recited a prayer that safeguarded the boat and allowed safe passage to the shores of Aotearoa – New Zealand. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Steph Douglass, owner of 29 rental units and co-founder of Open House Austin. I recently read the book Cloud Atlas, which focused several chapters on 19th century Maori culture, and I’ve wanted to learn more. It’s wonderful how they are fighting to preserve their heritage! As we sip our tea Harry talks to us about the struggles faced by his tribe in modern times.
