These portals provide an alternative reality for its users and the creators. The portals in this concept provide physical and graphic representations of entry points into another space. “A land of dreamers and creators, California has always been fertile ground for risk-taking and avant-garde thinking across all realms of design. Also, sometimes, working in a studio, you can express your own personal style, because that’s what you’re hired for. But running your own studio, you have to understand that it’s about what the client wants. Sometimes we thought we were hitting the mark really well – and it was a high mark, just on the wrong target.

Scribble Pad Studios is a full service concept design and illustration house in Los Angeles, CA.

Magic City Studios is a forward-thinking media company based in Los Angeles, California. What sets us apart is our unique and cutting-edge approach to combining traditional business practices with web3 values and style. The future of brands have an incredible amount of touch points to design. The culmination and refinement of designing between 2D and 3D to create something in between, that does not exist in the world.

And let’s face it, no other city can quite stage a design fair like Millan where design and style, the pleasure in the art of living, are embedded into its very fabric. Here, among the brutalist buildings and crumbling palazzos, cobbled lanes and gorgeous green courtyards, is where tradition and modernity blend so effortlessly, and where a dedication to design excellence makes it one of the global leaders in the field. We believe in Dynamistic Branding as the core theme to the connection and dichotomy of static and digital elements. Designing one of the only branding changes for Grand Central Market Los Angeles in 103 years, was an honor and pleasure as it is an icon of history for Los Angeles. Fluidity Design Consultants ARE a leading, Los Angeles-based water feature design and engineering firm with an international practice.

Working with the Italian furniture maker Kartell, his A.I Lounge and A.I Console use recycled plastic for an interesting dialogue on materials and production. In Hideki Yoshimoto’s Beyond the Horizon, the ancient past meets the future.

Some Of The Brands We Offer

There wasn’t an Entertainment Design program back then, but we had our own little group within the illustration department. After we graduated we kept in touch as friends, but we didn’t cross paths until three years ago. I also do a lot of teaching, which allows me to give newer artists experience on basic things. We do the majority of the heavy stuff in house, but we outsource design support. Back in 2007, I was working at NCsoft when it closed its studio in Santa Monica. So I went freelance and established Scribble Pad in 2008, initially just for myself.

The design theme Modern Nostalgia combines the past and future concurrently providing a sense of familiarity and security of new timelessness. Influenced by the manufacturing styles of the classic and historic neon signs, the signage is oversized and extruded to a point of nostalgia. Designed custom graphics and interior art for Google's refreshed Mountain View buildings to convey how spaces, people, and ideas are connected with a common thread. The launch coincides with a global rebrand by Henrik Purienne, Design Miami’s Global Creative Director for 2024, who decided on the theme of “Living With Design”. The concept will be showcased through “photography of celebrated creatives within their lived environments” alongside a refreshed graphic identity that aims to streamline the visual direction across Design Miami’s four editions.

A Brand Refresh

This inspiration derives from plant’s inclination towards the sun, and the ways in which each individual species evolves and adapts to harness the sun’s energy. Friedman Benda (New York/Los Angeles) will be presenting a group exhibition that highlights LA-based design practices, while Moderne Gallery (Philadelphia) will showcase rare and important works by George Nakashima. Influential galleries will be bringing their A-game to the launch of Design Miami LA, with most of them showcasing a range of new works from notable artists and makers. The first-ever Design Miami LA will be held at the 1938 Holmby Hills estate, a historic private home designed by renowned architect Paul R. Williams. The expansive 30,000sqft estate was the former residence of late fashion designer Max Azria. “2024 is a year of evolution for Design Miami, as we continue to reach wider audiences through our expanding programming and ever-growing creative network.

This concept of Ma examines the meaning of space, pursuing the value of negative space with respect to positive space. This concept keeps the reductive nature of the background, foreground, materiality and typography in balance. Our design theme, Heliotropic Growth extracts from the vertically reaching biophilic architecture design of Kengo Kuma’s Park Habitat.

Unruly Heroes

We’re also working on a series of educational books on concept design that will hopefully be coming out in the next year or so. I’ve been part of the educational community for the last six years or so, and it’s a big part of what I do. Our team consists of seasoned experts in the video game industry, who have contributed to iconic titles such as Rayman, Assassin's Creed, and many others at Ubisoft, as well as talented creatives from the world of indie games. A favourite installation, and one that offered the perfect sanctuary from the lively city, was to be had at Emotions of the Sun by champagne house Veuve Clicquot—an enchanting space transporting the viewer on a sensory journey of textures and tones.

While Faye Toogood created an intriguing space for Tacchini at Rude Arts Club with her irregular and elliptical shapes, sculptural elements mixed with delicate softness, which blended the British designer’s quirky spirit with fine Italian craftsmanship. Milan saw some wonderfully whimsical designs too, for a moment’s smile among the otherwise more serious discussions on machine intelligence and climate emergency. At the Triennale di Milano (until June 16, 2024) is an immersive site-specific video installation that takes you into the creative mind of the brilliant Italian architect Alessandro Mendini. The French designer said of the work, “it is a sensorial and sentimental plunge into the extraordinary universe of bizarreness, creative fantasy, and wit,” which pretty much sums it up. Elsewhere designers continued delving into the potentials of artificial intelligence in design and production.

The freelance world was growing and I began getting a lot more work, so it’s since gone from one person to a four-person team. We also have outsourcing staff, both in the States and internationally. There are some individuals we’ve been working with for at least a couple of years now.

Designing a brand that is in constant change, but rooted in a single vision. We work on everything from super-big high-profile games to very small garage studios trying to develop something new. I try to work with people, not products, building relationships rather than just trying to work on the coolest thing all the time.

Scribble Pad Studios works with everyone from videogame developers to theme park companies. We caught up with James to find out more about the Scribble Pad story, the changes in going from a solo freelancer to a studio head, and the need to stay versatile in order to thrive. Elsewhere, Dutch solar designer Marjan van Aubel proposed a future where solar energy is holistically embedded in the design process, rather than an afterthought add-on. The car’s color changed as the sun charged the battery, all to the natural sounds of rustling bamboo and the sun, based on sounds collected by Nasa. Within the historic walls of Teatro Gerolamo, design studio Formafantasma challenged us to look beyond mere aesthetics in design by turning the gaze to ethical modes of production. Meanwhile the color palette of restrained greys and dark green was chosen for it requires less resin than lighter and brighter shades.

That breaks down into initial pitch work, concept art and production art. I have experience working in advertising and marketing as an illustrator so I also offer services there. Although Unruly Heroes may be representative of the different skills and practices learned during the team’s collective time at Ubisoft, that isn’t to say the game isn’t unique. On the contrary, Alfroy stressed the idea that, creatively, Unruly Heroes is its own beast. As opposed to past Rayman games where cooperative play meant playing as characters with similar if not identical movesets, the game puts players in control of four different characters, each with their own distinct personality and play style.

In complete contrast, Samuel Ross’s Terminal 02 captured the imagination for its ginormous scale as well as turning the surrealist lens on the humble toilet. There were more subtle surrealist moments elsewhere with materials, color and shape playing tricks with the mind. Californian designer Yves Béhar’s Peaks for furniture brand MOOOI, for instance, is a modular sofa composed of dual triangles interconnected by fabric hinges, which allows them to rotate up or down to create multiple seating arrangements.

How to design a living room expert tips on planning, costs, decor and more

how to design living room

Invest in pieces that won't wear down over time, and only bring items you truly love into your space. Steering clear of fast-moving trends and focusing on the essentials is ultimately the key to designing an expensive-looking space. A luxe open-plan living room doesn't need to stick to just one purpose – make the most of your space by dividing it into 'distinct zones,' crafted specially for specific activities. This will make your living room feel bespoke, and like it's been designed with luxury in mind. Ewa suggests keeping the color scheme consistent across 'zones' to ensure your space doesn't feel fragmented or disorganized. From arranging furniture to layering living room lighting, there's so much opportunity for a layout refresh – and many options don't require anything new!

Paint It All Black

Before that, I studied Journalism and English Literature at New York University. I’ve moved around quite a bit in the last several years, most recently making the trip to London, and love transforming each new space into a comfortable retreat that feels like home. When it comes to decor, I’m most drawn to unique vintage finds and calming colors. 'While you don't have to spend a fortune on every piece of furniture, investing in high-quality basics like a well-made sofa or a sturdy dining table can elevate the entire room's appearance. By implementing these layout tricks and design principles, you can create a space that looks and feels luxurious without breaking the bank, she says.

Trial #3: Open Living Room + Dining

Bold colors, cozy textures, and modern design elements give this living room an eclectic feel. If you’re unsure where to start with your living room ideas, choose your largest piece of furniture first so you can use it as a starting point. Here, a leather sofa holds a collection of throw pillows whose colors and texture remind us of this Better Homes & Gardens Blue Diamond Geo Decorative Pillow ($20, Walmart).

Cohesive Color

how to design living room

We spoke with two interior designers who shared insight into what makes these rooms different and how you can style each of them. Though it often doesn't take up much space, lighting is an integral element of your living room's layout – and getting it right can really make the space. Jessica Cinnamon, interior designer and founder of Jessica Cinnamon Design, suggests decorating with mirrors, large-scale light fixtures and specialty lighting to make a grand statement in your space. Soft neutrals can be a great choice for a sophisticated and relaxing colour scheme.

Marie adds that taking a layered approach to living room lighting is also a surefire way to elevate your space. Adding a built-in bench under the window or hanging wicker chairs creates devoted seating areas within the spaces. Natural wood colors are effortless and calm when paired with tonal whites. Oftentimes, mixing multiple seating areas and using lighting as a kind of sculpture gives the room heightened appeal,' she says. "If any room in the home can take a deep shade, it’s a living room," continues Cathryn.

Working Overtime Studio Apartment

Plan both open and closed storage, to create space for items that look good on show and those that are best concealed. If you have kids and/or pets, it’s worth investing in good upholstered pieces, recommends Kylie Bodiya of Bee’s Knees Interior Design Studio in Massachusetts. ‘Those are the higher budget items, but that’s where you should put your invested dollars. More unusual choices include sleek contemporary polished concrete, while porcelain tiles or vinyl can create the look of surfaces such as wood or stone without the same care requirements.

If you're looking for a luxe living room, 'don't overpopulate the space,' warns Brittny. If there is one room you want to feel welcoming, warm and snug, it has to be the living room — and there are several design tricks to ensure your space feels cosy. "Sisal, seagrass and mountain grass all have smooth fibres and offer a crisp, neat effect," says Jon. "Coir is suitable for those seeking a rougher, more casual effect. Jute is the softest of the natural floor coverings, giving a comfortable feel underfoot. However it is less hardwearing and more absorbent."

Swap different finishings, textures and fabrics with ease and adjust as needed.Preview how your room will look in 3D and easily switch between 2D and 3D views. You can do virtual walkthroughs of your projects and share hi-res renderings with friends and family, or any contractors you hire to do the work for you. As you browse, you'll find plenty of advice pertaining to living room paint colors (we're loving green living rooms, but you can't go wrong with timeless white living rooms). You may decide to experiment with a trendy wallpaper, invest in a comfortable sofa, hang fresh curtains or arrange a gallery wall — which are clever, renter-friendly design ideas.

Use neutral hues in textures that suit your design style to give a gray living room a more personal look. Plush blankets and layers of taupe accent pillows create a cozy, lived-in look without distracting from the modern feel created by the coffee table and abstract artwork. Picture ledges are an easy living room idea for an alternative to built-in shelves that create an accent wall.

"Durable fabrics such as Crypton or indoor/outdoor options are a must-have for the family room," says Peltier. Above, extra seating can come in the form of ottomans and furniture that’s easy to move depending on whether you’re entertaining or just having a quiet night at home and want your fireplace clear. Pay attention to interiors that make you feel calm, at ease, and most like yourself, and channel them in your own home. Out of all the spaces you dwell in, your home is the only one you can control – take advantage of the opportunities ahead of you and design with mental wellness front of mind. Instead, design from a place that feels personal, and tap into what makes you happy and feel most balanced. For some people a dark and moody home feels oppressive, but for others it offers a quiet respite and a much-needed contrast to the harshly lit buildings we spend a lot of our time in,' she says.

No longer just reserved for period properties, paneling now comes in so many forms to suit all styles and can add just as much of an impact as decorating with bold paint or patterns. "Of all of the rooms in your home, this commonly used space should reflect you the most," says Gage. "You really can start with any piece, be it something you have and love or something you've been coveting and are ready to purchase," says Michelle Gage, the founder and CEO of Michelle Gage Interior Design. "For ease, it's helpful to start with a large one—like a sofa. That lays the foundation and helps to inform the furniture layout."

Pillows might find a new home in your living room and add a pop of color as well as comfort or interest. Meanwhile gathering artwork and photographs together and hanging on one wall or above furniture can ensure the group reads as one impactful piece. 'So many people hesitate to embrace bold or moody palettes in the common areas of their home, worrying that they might end up feeling dated. I like to remind clients that the world is a vibrant and colorful place, and that people love when homes reflect the beauty we see outside our windows. ‘In small living rooms it might be tempting to move the furniture to its corners and have free space in the middle, but make sure that layout works for you,’ says London-based interior designer Louise Bradley.

She stopped short of extending it to the ceiling to allow the sunshine to permeate. For more inspiration, here are 10 clever ideas to help you live your life to the fullest…without cluttering your space, of course. A family room is a casual space for people to gather and relax, often directly set off from the kitchen. "The family rooms we are designing are always adjacent to the kitchen or fully open to it, and many times we call this space the great room because there's no separation between the two spaces," says Peltier.

"Typically, I think of living rooms as spaces that have more stationary furniture and may be a little more elevated," says Haywood. The focal point in a living room is often a fireplace, with a formal seating structure arranged around it, notes Peltier. "Typically a fireplace and a TV may or may not be part of the equation depending on the frequency of use and if there is another (more casual) family room in the house," she says. There are so many decisions to make, from choosing the right paint color to deciding on the layout of your furniture.

8 Simple Steps to Arrange Flowers Like a Pro

flower arrangement design

Remember, dried flowers are delicate; handle them with care to prevent petals and stems from breaking. This way, your dried floral arrangements will continue to add a touch of elegance to your space for months or even years. To keep your flowers fresh after same-day delivery, start by snipping the stems at a 45-degree angle before placing them in clean water; this increases the water uptake for the flowers.

Rhythm

It’s important to use the best vase shapes for each type of arrangement. To display fresh-cut hydrangeas, use a round or snifter-shaped vase. You can add sand and shells to the bottom of the vase for a beach-inspired vibe, too.

Downtown L.A. is hurting. Frank Gehry thinks arts can lead a revival

Cut these stems on the shorter side, identify empty spots in your structure, and fill them in. “These broad-faced flowers will continue to define the space while also covering your mechanics” like the tape and chicken wire, says Sammy. We asked Sammy to share secrets of flower arranging that you can use for any arrangement. (The step-by-step instructions for the arrangement below will work no matter what flowers you use.) I hope his tutorial is as enlightening to you as it was to me. This is usually the largest or most vibrant flower in your design.

Long-Stemmed Tulips

The trick to getting balance right is to use the horizontal and vertical lines as a guide. Suppose you take a pencil, for example, and hold it up in front of the arrangement in the center. That is not to say the same elements because that would be boring, but does each side have equal weighting?

By considering the time of year or the type of event you’re decorating for, your floral arrangements can be both inspired and inspiring. Remember, the key is to reflect the ambiance you want to create while adding your personal touch for truly exceptional displays. A monochromatic design can bring a sophisticated and unified look to your floral arrangements. To achieve this, you’ll select flowers in varying shades of the same color. Greenery and foliage are essential to add depth and a touch of nature to your modern arrangements.

Ensure the water is changed every two days to prevent bacteria growth, which can shorten the life of your arrangement. From bold monochromatic designs to diverse textures, modern floral arrangements can transform your environment. As you dive into modern flower arrangements, you’ll discover how techniques and materials combine to reflect current trends and artistic expressions.

Should You Take a Flower Farming Course Before Starting a Flower Farm?

Shapes create points that are then interesting to the eye. When choosing greenery for your bouquet, consider incorporating a few different textures. "Long wispy grasses look great in a clean simple design, and sometimes you need a big shiny leaf to add drama," says Gofton.

In addition to creating arrangements for high-profile clients through Bia Blooms Floral Studio, she owns a boutique talent agency, BEOTIS, that represents writers and artists of color. Yapp also runs the Arrange for Change project, raising funds and creating community floral arrangements for local nonprofits. "Flowers make people feel seen and celebrated. I love being a part of that," she says. There is such a thing as too much stuff in an arrangement and it’s often the time you can say, that’s enough, that makes a good designer. Too many overlapping leaves, too many overlapping flowers, buds, and branches can muddy the rhythm of a piece and have no way for the eye to move through a design with ease.

Cut your flowers and remove some of the leaves—which will keep them looking fresh for longer.

Remodeling and renovation tips and ideas for projects big and small. Ideas to update and improve your outdoor space with hardscaping elements. Both institutions will decide what exhibitions will travel to Las Vegas in a process expected to unfold organically as the collaboration develops, Govan and Harmon say. Because the museums are relatively close in proximity, Govan hopes the shows can travel in electric vehicles to reduce the carbon footprint of the exchange. Govan says criticism that the arrangement boils down to L.A. In an interview with The Times, Govan emphasized that continual expansion along Wilshire Boulevard would yield diminishing returns.

For example, using an orange flower between a yellow and a red flower, tones the two down and links them. In a line design, two of the same flowers will provide more rhythm than one, but two flowers of different sizes, or one more open than the other, create balance. Dominance in a design must be added with care and thought.

In much of the country, forsythia grows roadside and in backyards. Recut at home and watch the branches bloom yellow and leaf out. Here, @seed.to.table tops a mantle with a few stems in vases. Clean water is the simplest and easiest way to extend the vase life of your arrangement. Now before we jump right in to the actual flower arranging process, I need to share the tools and supplies you’re going to need for this project. Learn how to arrange flowers and create a colorful, professional-looking bouquet with these flower-arranging techniques.

And I promise, with practice as you start recognizing which of the categories each of these ingredients fall into- flower arranging will become so much easier for you. I want flowers to feel APPROACHABLE because in my opinion, flowers are such a simple and easy way to add just a bit more joy into your everyday. Reach for your “foundation” flowers with large blooms next (here, the fluffy white hyacinth).

Red gerbera daisies ring the outside, frilly yellow solidago rims the top and yellow calla lilies add an accent. Here’s an oldie but goodie from Happy Haute Home, who filled the family silver with joy. Cut wet floral foam to fit snugly in the opening to hold the flowers. Pick up two tones of roses plus delphinium for an arrangement that will ooze charm.

Fragrance is not technically a principle of design, but it also cannot be discounted when building with flowers. Smell is one of the most powerful senses and some flowers may have an overpowering scent and clash with other flowers. What is not within a designer’s toolbox is the ability to know which fragrance will be off-putting to some and glorious to others as the scent of a flower is a very personal thing. It is all about numbers – the number of leaves in an arrangement, or the number of arrangements in a room. The trunk is broad with the ends of the branches getting smaller as you move up the tree. There are no stark changes in the line of a tree that would cause the eye to stop and lose rhythm.

Large items are not placed on the outside as they unbalance the design. However, placement near the center is not always the case, as long as the design has balance. Now it’s time to make the finishing touches to your lovely bouquet of flowers.

The ups and downs of Jacqueline and David Siegel’s mega-mansion were chronicled in the 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles. Back then it seemed like the couple might lose their still-under-construction behemoth. But in 2017, they were reportedly attempting to hire Bravo’s Flipping Out crew to decorate every inch of the suburban palace’s 90,000 square feet.

This huge mansion rivals some of the biggest houses in America, but features distinctly Chinese architecture, even going as far as using the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, a UNESCO heritage site, as inspiration. Whether it’s a 27-story skyscraper with 600 people on staff or a centuries-old palace ready to host the most prestigious dignitaries, the largest houses in the world have everything it takes to impress. Some people want their home to serve as a place for collecting treasured items. Others desire the ultimate space to host parties and enjoy life to the fullest.

Not much is known about the details of the property; however, the 117,000 sq ft estate is believed to have 130 rooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and is surrounded by a massive wall. The 50-acre estate boasts 19 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, a commercial greenhouse, a private theatre, 12 swimming pools, an outdoor kitchen, and a helipad. This Versailles is in a gated community in Windermere, Florida, and covers 85,000 square feet. The original design will have nine kitchens, 14 bedrooms, three locations will house an indoor swimming pool.

The most expensive and biggest house in the world is subject to change over time as new properties are built and prices fluctuate. However, historically, some notable examples include properties like Buckingham Palace in the United Kingdom and the Antilia in India. Situated on the banks of Dushu Lake, this home has 32 bedrooms and bathrooms, a wine cellar, Lavish gardens, and a very fancy ornamental pond that can hold a wide number of Khoi or expensive fishes. Designed by Leandro V. Locsin and built by Ayala International, the palace cost close to $1.5 billion.

The family is known to have several super expensive homes around the world. Are you ready to witness the epitome of architectural extravagance? Let’s embark on this grand tour of the world’s biggest houses and delve into the realm of ultimate luxury and magnificence. The Safra’s, Edmond and Lily, who once owned Villa Leopolda on the French Riveria also own this impressive compound in Brazil.

The French Riviera is home to Villa Leopolda, which was originally built by King Leopold II of Belgium, then presented as a gift to his mistress, a French teenage prostitute. The stunning 18-acre (7.2-hectare) estate appears in the classic movie "To Catch a Thief" and includes 11 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. It offers unparalleled views of the Mediterranean, as well as a greenhouse, botanical gardens and even a helipad. Today, Villa Leopolda is considered the most expensive private residence in all of Europe, with 80,000 square feet (7,432 square meters) of space. It is currently owned by a Russian billionaire who bought it for $750 million in 2008.

Witanhurst

Number one on the list of biggest houses in the world is the Istana Nurul Iman Palace in Brunei. The palace spreads out over 2.15 million square feet and is owned by Brunei’s sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah. Of course, then come the added extras of swimming pools, garages, movie theaters, and sports courts. Leandro V. Locsin, a Filipino Visayan architect, constructed it with gilded domes and vaulted ceilings to reflect Brunei’s Malay and Islamic influences. The designation of “world’s biggest house” is difficult to determine and contentious, as different countries employ different criteria to declare that their big mansions are the largest.

Although it's clearly the epitome of modern luxe, there are a few nods to the past here –- a moat surrounds this modern Bel Air castle. Although their efforts were paused in 2008 following the economic recession, construction is resumed and will likely be completed by mid-2022. There are 43 bathrooms, 34 bedrooms, three kitchens, 65 fireplaces and 175,000 square feet of living space. Designed in the French Renaissance style, the largest house in America boasts several secret rooms.

Witanhurst came to be in the 1910s, reported the Daily Mail, by the owner of a local soap company. Even from the very beginning, it had some very special guests, including Queen Elizabeth herself. But since then, the property has become much less popular with neighbors. Similar to many other massive mansions, those living nearby Witanhurst have complained that it has disturbed their window views and even lessened the values of their homes. Located near popular the Hamptons town Southampton, nearby residents called Rennert's proposed home "audacious," said New York magazine.

Wintanhurst Mansion is the second largest estate in England, coming in at a whopping 90,000 square feet. This impressive abode was designed by architect George Hubbard and took seven years to complete. It has had several high-profile owners over the journey including soap magnate Sir Arthur Crosfield, Kuwaiti businessman Mr. Al-Hasouwy, and Russian billionaire Andrey Guryev. In addition, there's a 5,000-person banquet hall, five swimming pools and a 110-car garage. Even the hundreds of polo ponies have their own air-conditioned stables. This impressive estate is several times larger than Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Versailles.

The regal 117,000-square-foot manse contains an estimated 130 rooms plus an extravagant outdoor living area. However, little is known about the interior design of the home as the Safra family has kept a quiet private life. The property is managed by a staff of 600 and although it's only 27 stories, their oversized stature actually makes it as tall as the average 60-story building. Six floors are dedicated to housing up to 168 cars, plus there's a movie theater, beauty salon, ice cream parlor and nine high-speed elevators.

In fact some are so basic they’re most likely featured in children’s books somewhere. It still blows our minds to think that one family can live in a 250 room house. The oil and gas tycoon completed the $2 billion house in 2010, working with two different architecture firms to get the job done.

Istana Nurul Iman Palace: World's Largest House

Valued at $500 million, according to the Financial Times (via Luxtionary), this 62,000 square foot pad cost Rennert $110 million to construct before he moved in during the mid-2000s. And that's just the outdoors; inside the 72,000 square foot garden palace, there are also 32 bathrooms, a colossal wine cellar, and décor that mixes both modern luxury as well as traditional East Asian touches. Every one of the 32 bedrooms also face south, which makes it so they garner the most natural sunlight during the daytime hours. There are 39 bathrooms, 29 bedrooms, a 91 feet dining room and three swimming pools. As well as the main house, there’s a playhouse and two pool houses on the property.

Fair Field (Sagaponack, New York)

Nestled on the shores of Lake Washington, Bill Gates has a huge home with a relatively simple design. This was previously his and Melinda Gates’s house until they divorced. Mired in controversy, Fair Field is owned by junk bond billionaire Ira Rennert.

Antilia in Mumbai, India

The home is composed with almost 30 floors that have ceilings that so high that they equate to about the same height as a two-story structure. The skyscraper home stands over 550 feet tall, and each of the 27 floors was built with extra-high ceilings. Considering the average ceiling height, the building could’ve had up to 60 floors with standard floor construction. You can visit the world’s biggest house during the three days of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Guests are served food and can queue to meet the Sultan or his wife. With 1,788 rooms, a mosque and 257 bathrooms, Istana Nurul Iman Palace is the biggest mansion in the world.

The famous East Front balcony is part of a later addition to the building that was completed in the early 20th century. Not only that, but the palace also boasts a post office, a cinema, an indoor swimming pool, a doctor’s surgery, and a jeweler’s workshop. Buckingham Palace is one of King Charles III’s residences, but it is not privately owned because it is part of The Crown Estate.

This enormous estate, which was formerly held by TV producer Aaron Spelling and later purchased by Petra Ecclestone, is also known as Spelling Manor. The French Regency-style home Maison de L’Amitie (which translates to “the house of friendship”) sits on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, with a border length of 492 feet facing the water. Ira Rennert, a tycoon in the junk bond industry, owns the controversial Fair Field. When MagCorp discovered that he had used company cash to buy a mansion in the Hamptons, they sued him and won, resulting in a $213 million settlement. The property also features expansive grounds and what is arguably the nicest beachfront on the entire continent. Sydell Miller, the proprietor of Matrix Essentials hair care products, conceived and constructed La Reverie.

This mega-mansion in Bel-Air, California is the largest private residence in the US as well as one of the biggest houses in the world. Under construction for about seven years, the huge mansion called “The One” was created by film producer Nile Niami. This architectural marvel indeed dominates the landscape with a total area of 2.15 million square feet. The official residence of the Sultan of Brunei, this massive estate cost more than $1.4 billion to build — and that was back in 1984 when a buck went a lot further.

There are 13 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, but that’s about all we know about the interior. It’s still unclear whether the house is actually complete, with several lawsuits having impacted the build over the years. This mansion overlooking Lake Washington is owned by Bill Gates and his ex-wife Melinda. While it was once the couple’s family home for many years, since the two got divorced, nobody is quite who owns the house or lives there.

With a total surface of 400,000 sq ft, it’s the second largest private residence in the world right now and took over $1 billion to be constructed. But that probably wasn’t too much for the owner, who is India’s richest man after all, with a net worth exceeding $30 billion. The property boasts two guest houses with a total of 11 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, immense gardens and probably the best beach front on the whole continent. The FoF 1.0 has a sibling printer on the UMaine campus, which was the previous record holder for the world’s largest 3D printer. It’s already been used to manufacture a 600-square-foot, single-family home made of wood fiber and bioresin materials. Luckily, the two models are housed in the same location and can work on different aspects of the same projects simultaneously.

CIA plus astrophysicist plus disaster-proof equals conspiracy theories, and there are plenty of those swirling around Pensmore. Its future is uncertain, though, because Huff filed a lawsuit against the construction company that built the 72,000-square-foot lab/bunker/family home. Most over-the-top mansions are built for aesthetics, but Steven Huff constructed Pensmore for science. Thanks to the concrete Huff created, it’s supposed to withstand bombs, earthquakes, and whatever else the Ozarks throw at it. 35 Examples of Bad Website Design in 2024

design of bad

In this course, you will gain an introduction to the breadth of UX design and understand why it matters. You’ll also learn the roles and responsibilities of a UX designer, how to confidently talk about UX and practical methods that you can apply to your work immediately. As indicated by Don Norman, User Experience is an umbrella term that covers several areas. When you work with user experience, it’s crucial to understand what those areas are so that you know how best to apply the tools available to you. Not understanding the needs of your audience can lead to terrible design.

A mobile-optimized version would help Lastpass provide a better user experience and establish its reputation as the best password management platform. Mobile optimization involves much more than fitting desktop content onto a smaller screen. You must restructure, reimagine, and redesign to enhance user engagement on handheld devices. Platforms, especially with large user bases, must invest in responsive design that caters to various screen sizes and devices. LastPass, a password manager tool, earned the reputation of strengthening online security as millions of users and many online businesses use it. Yet, looking closely at its mobile web interface reveals significant discrepancies against its desktop version.

Confusing iconography

The challenge lies in meeting immediate design goals, anticipating future trends, and ensuring adaptability. It's a process that demands a keen understanding of the ever-shifting dynamics in the design world. Lauren Sheldon is a motivated and detail-oriented visual communicator pursuing a career in graphic design. Her website is unique, sticking to Double Spanish White as the homepage’s background color. This minimalistic website with a plain web design displays minimal content on her homepage’s extensive plain white background.

How Bad UX and UI Design Impacts User Experience

After all, good design isn’t just about the way a site looks; it’s primarily about how well your design works for your users. Bad alignment of elements can make a page feel unpolished even if users don’t immediately recognize why. Using a grid to place elements within your design is a simple, established way to maintain alignment. The entire point of icons is to give visitors a visual cue about the content they’re seeing. The goal is for users to immediately recognize what an icon represents to make interacting with your site easier.

By understanding the needs and preferences of your target audience, you can create something that truly resonates with them and meets their expectations. By studying successful examples like Apple, designers can gain valuable insights into how to create user-centered designs that are both functional and visually appealing. Apple is a company that has long been praised for its design aesthetics and user-centered approach.

Spotify's mobile user interface serves as an ideal model for app design. Its intuitive layout offers users a smooth experience that prioritizes aesthetics and functionality. Design that does not consider all users, including those with disabilities, is a hallmark of bad design.

What makes a design bad is the overall impact it leaves on the experience of a user. Poor web design is characterized by poor user experience, poor navigation, slow loading of pages, and SEO. The best way to prevent poor web design is by paying close attention to the design process, ensuring design elements are well-blended without affecting the site’s responsiveness.

And after all, designers can't be expected to predict all future associations that will emerge related to their clients. There are many ways to establish text hierarchy – through font, weight, colour, location of text – and sometimes tweaking more than one of these is necessary. In this case, switching from all caps to title case was not enough to prevent an unintended reading of this design, with title placed directly under the author's name. Remember that as a designer, you're not only responsible for how things look but also for their context and how they'll be read.

Good vs. Bad Design: 10 Examples

Additionally, several badly designed apps have lost to their competitors despite having unique features. Here are some examples of bad UI design in the digital realm. A good, user-friendly design is intuitive, easy to use, and aesthetically pleasing.

You’ll also learn how to leverage your existing skills to successfully transition to and thrive in a new career in UX. Designers must work closely with developers, content creators, and other stakeholders to ensure that design decisions are feasible and aligned with overall project goals. Collaboration can also bring new insights and ideas to the design process. Designers should conduct user research to gain insights into users' needs, preferences, behaviors, and challenges. Create personas and user journey maps to guide design decisions from the perspective of the end-user.

Vital information might go overlooked if the color remains uniform without breaks. A user might miss essential sections if everything blends too much. For instance, while the profound purple works well for headlines, using it extensively without variation can overshadow other critical information. For instance, the sidebar contains the actor’s star meter, related photos, and other content. Hacker News is the go-to source for tech coverage and breaking news related to cybersecurity.

This new X logo went through multiple changes within just a few days. It was apparent Elon Musk couldn’t decide on the design for the X logo. After changing the Twitter logo to X he introduced a new version and immediately reverted to the first X logo.

When purchasing from an online marketplace like eBay, making an informed decision is critical. EBay attempts to solve this by providing an excess of information on its product pages, but by doing that, it’s information overload. I see design as a tool that can assist in navigating through the ever evolving complexities around us. Often, Bad Design is something that doesn’t stress enough on the ergonomics of the output. Resorting to the next best solution that seems Easy to Use for the audience is chosen to be the final one.

The proposed parking sign has a user-centered approach that meets drivers’ simple desire to know if they can park in a given location. This information is effectively communicated through the sign’s use of visual cues vs. text in the previous version. Nilli’s sign includes green to indicate parking availability and red to indicate no parking. By analyzing these successful design examples, we can see how they prioritize user experience, efficiency, and aesthetics. These principles can be applied to our own work, helping us create designs that not only look good but also function effectively and meet the needs of users.

In today’s highly competitive market, businesses must pay attention to the importance of design. Bad design significantly impacts usability and accessibility, which leads to a poor user experience. It introduces a steep learning curve, reduces efficiency, increases error rates, and lowers user satisfaction. This design flaw frustrates users and may deter them from using the product further.

Because eliminating ads is impossible, the goal becomes displaying them in a way that disrupts user experience as minimally as possible. Think of slow load time as a website's enemy; over half of mobile website visitors exit a site if it takes more than three seconds to load. The user journey is also difficult to follow on ZARA's mobile site. When clicking on the hamburger menu on mobile, an unconventional navigation menu reveals itself. Instead, there’s a lengthy list that visitors have to sort through to find what they’re looking for. When one works on creating a Bad Design, it involves pushing the ideas to extremes so as to arrive at an enhanced understanding of elements of design.
